The cornerstone essay behind how I work. What my mum's pond, the city of London, and the octopus taught me about foundations, amplification, and why I've stopped believing you can wall technology off from life.

I've always been drawn to things too big or too old to hold in your head at once. Complexity. Depth. Systems that took so long to form you can't quite get your mind around them. I didn't choose it as an interest so much as keep noticing I'd wandered back to it.
I think about a pond my mum built. She made it from a hole in the ground up. I remember the digging most, because it went on far longer than a hole seemed to warrant. Then the liner. Then a long stretch where nothing happened at all. The water sat there. It went green. For weeks it looked like a mistake.
Then, slowly, it wasn't. The green cleared. Plants took hold. Something invisible settled into balance, and one day you could see straight to the bottom. And then the life came, in its own order and its own time. Tadpoles first. Then frogs. Dragonflies stitching across the surface, butterflies at the edges, cats and foxes coming down at dusk to drink. The pond couldn't hold any of them until it was ready to.
What I was watching was an ecosystem being made. And the part that stayed with me is the order of events. The living, visible surface came last: the frogs and the dragonflies and the animals that trusted the water enough to drink from it. All of that arrived only once everything underneath had started working together: bacteria I couldn't see turning waste into something harmless, plants pulling the water into balance, a whole hidden economy running so the surface could stay calm and full of life. Let one part of it fail and the pond goes green again within days.
Around that time I read a book called Other Minds, by Peter Godfrey-Smith, about the octopus and the deep origins of the mind. It gave me another version of the same idea. Intelligence didn't evolve once. It evolved at least twice, on branches that split before either had a brain worth the name: once in the long line that led to us, and again, completely separately, in the cephalopods. "When you dive into the sea," he writes, "you are diving into the origin of us all." Mind is not a human invention. Life reached for it more than once, in the dark, hundreds of millions of years before there was anyone around to be impressed by it.
You can see the same thing, slowed right down, in any ecosystem old enough to have settled. A stretch of British countryside left more or less alone for a few centuries: the hedgerow, the woodland floor, the life in the soil, all of it layered and interdependent and running with no manager. Or the ocean, older still, which is what Godfrey-Smith is really writing about underneath the octopus. None of these are simple. They are complexity that has had the time to find its balance. They look calm for the same reason the pond looked calm.
And it isn't only the things we'd call natural. Peter Ackroyd wrote a book called London: The Biography. Biography, from the Greek bios: life. He means it plainly: the city is a living body, shot through with arteries, made of organs, prone to its moods. "London," he writes, "moved organically… always finding the right ecology in which it might exist and flourish." It began on a river and it still ebbs and flows with one. Its people are the heart, and the heart beats fast: they walk quickly, they shout, they laugh, they drink, they work, they cheer, and all of that noise is the sound of a thing being alive.
You can read the whole history in the streets. Some London lanes are barely wide enough for one person, because they were never designed, they accumulated: built on top of each other, around each other, across each other, over centuries. The buildings say the same. Some wonky, some half torn down, some new and shining, every one of them leaning on what stood there before. After the Great Fire of 1666, Christopher Wren drew up a plan to sweep all of it away and start again with wide boulevards and a clean grid, a London to rival Paris. It was rejected. Re-parcelling the land would have cost too much and taken too long, and people wanted their own plots back. So the city rebuilt itself on its medieval pattern, widening here, swapping timber for brick and stone, but keeping its shape. The organic city won out over the perfect one.
That is a pattern, and once you see it you start seeing it everywhere. A system forms for its original needs, and then it grows, adapts, evolves. Some look exquisite at the start: clean, uniform, perfectly architected roads and matching buildings. Then something changes, the way it always does, and the materials it was built from turn out not to bend. Some systems take that change well, because whoever made them respected the natural foundations underneath, or because they got lucky and happened to be in the right place at the right time. Some take it badly and learn, the hard way, how to build more soundly and more sustainably. And some die. Either because they won't take the lesson, or because they were never granted the time and the luck to learn it.
Which raises the question of how long any of this takes. Longer than the mind really wants to hold. Earth spent most of its existence with nothing on it you'd recognise as alive. The foundations, breathable air and oceans and the first fragile cells, took billions of years to lay down, and life came close to ending several times over on the way. Five mass extinctions that we know of. Ice, asteroids, the seas turning toxic. Long stretches where the whole experiment could have simply stopped, and nearly did.
But there's a second half to the story. Once the foundations were in place, things moved fast. After billions of years of almost nothing, complex life arrived in what, on that timescale, was a blink. Amplification, once the base is sound.
And amplification doesn't care what it's amplifying. A good foundation compounds into something resilient and strange and beautiful. A weak one compounds just as eagerly into collapse. The speed is the same either way. Only the foundation decides which direction it runs.
London is proof that a foundation isn't only what you start with. Its position on the river was a shrewd bet, and partly luck. What made it last was everything it survived and learned from: building on marshland, burning down more than once, laying infrastructure that carried plague as efficiently as it carried people, choking on its own coal smoke, taking bombs and rebuilding after them. It has always been a hotbed of bad decisions, which is its own kind of life, and it kept adapting at roughly the pace the trouble arrived. It still gets things wrong. Only a few years ago it finished a tower with a curved glass face that focused the sun into a beam hot enough to melt the panels off a car parked in the street below. Then it worked out why, and fixed it. The good bones of London are mostly its scars.
There's another way it goes wrong, and my mum knows it better than I do. You can overload a pond. Let one plant do too well and it draws the water up and up, until the whole thing shrinks and there isn't enough left to keep anything else alive. A pond like that doesn't fail because its foundation was bad. It fails because one part of it took more than its share. Getting the balance right takes time and a bit of attention, though not so much that you're always interfering. Left alone, a pond silts up. Overfed, it collapses from the inside.
I build with AI for a living, and I think about this most days. The methods underneath it are borrowed from life, not dreamt up in a vacuum: selection, adaptation, networks that learn from what came before, behaviour that emerges from simple parts rather than being drawn up in advance. We keep discussing AI as though it were the opposite of nature, the cold thing come to replace the warm one. It isn't. AI is the newest amplifier we've built, running on logic life worked out long before us, laid on top of whatever foundations we give it. Good ones and bad ones. It will compound either.
Which is why I've stopped believing you can wall technology off from the life around it. People try. They talk about "tech" as its own country, with its own rules, sealed away from biology and ethics and the ordinary business of being alive. But everything we build is made by living things, used by living things, and lands, in the end, on a living body somewhere. Even something as abstract as a flat image on a screen is an outcome of life, an extension of it, which means the same old patterns are still running underneath. There's no clean edge where life stops and the system starts. It's all one pond.
So the decisions come down to something older than the tools. The difference between a good call and a bad one, in almost anything we make, is rarely the technical part. We already know most of what matters, and we know it from being alive: from what patience does and what neglect does, from watching things grow or rot depending on how they were tended. Most of that judgment is simply life, closely observed.
Jane Goodall spent years in the forest at Gombe, sitting still long enough that the chimpanzees stopped noticing her, before she understood them well enough to change what science believed a chimpanzee was. "Only if we understand, can we care," she wrote. "Only if we care, we will help. Only if we help, we shall be saved." The understanding comes first. Everything good we do is downstream of it.
The people I'd trust with a hard, high-stakes decision are almost never the ones who know the most tools. They're the ones who've taken the time to understand life itself, as far as a person can, and never stopped. My mum, reading the pond before she touched it. Godfrey-Smith, watching an octopus long enough to grant it a mind. Ackroyd, reading a whole civilisation in the width of a lane. The good decisions came out of the understanding, almost as a by-product.
I put a koi at the centre of my work. There was never one in my mum's pond. I chose it because it carries the lesson the pond taught me: a koi is what you see first, the colour and the movement and the stillness of a thing that looks effortless, and like the frogs and the dragonflies it can only be there because of everything working underneath it. What I stand for is the clear water. Lay the foundation with real patience and some respect for how living things behave, and the calm surface comes on its own. Rush it, or pretend your system runs on different rules than everything else that's alive, and the water turns green.
Because it is all the same thing, in the end. The pond, the reef, the city, the mind, the model running on my screen. Different scales of one process, working the same patterns it has always worked. It's called Life. And everything, even the abstract and the artificial and the barely comprehensible, is only ever an extension of it.
My mum still has that pond. She's talking about making it bigger. The water is clear.
